Munro of Scotland (Chaos & Civility II)

« on: September 15, 2009, 10:52:38 PM »

An ambitious collaboration was announced today between the united western nations of Scotland, Aidern, Oligamon, Babylon and Argarthia.

Ever since the moon landing 20 years ago, a steady stream of the great and the gifted has been arriving from across the continent to join the ambitious space project underway in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, helping to sustain the golden age which began nearly two decades ago with that historic human accomplishment.

Today, the governments of Soctland, Aidern, Oligamon, Babylon and Agarthia revealed their plans for what must surely be mankind's most ambitious project yet... an massive spaceship capable not only of interstellar travel, but which will also be capable of carrying up to 2,500 passengers the 4 light years to alpha centauri.

The UN space liner under construction in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh
The project is an equal collaboration between the Scottish,
Dernish, Oligar, Babylonian and Agarthian governments

It is believed the space liner will be completed in less than 10 years, and will take only 30 years or so to make the epic interstellar journey to Alpha Centauri, earth's solar system's nearest star (about 25 trillion miles away).  "We're not quite sure how fast that it is, but it's going to be flipping quick... " observed Ferdinand de Lesseps - the famous Scottish Engineer widely credited with designing the Galveston space elevator, and clearly impressed by the staggering amount of Dernish rocket fuel being pumped into the ship's fuel tanks.

Ferdinand was joined at the headquarters of the Scottish National Space Centre (SNSC) in Edinburgh by the famous Oligamon spiritual leader, St. John - who is to serve as the ship's chaplain - and the renowned Agarthian artist,  Thespis, who is serving as the project's director of communications.

The project was jointly financed by the five western nations, and the majority of the colonists will be taken from volunteers and crew from the five contributing nations.  10% of the places on the passenger roster are also being made available to other nations via a lottery system, to help ensure genetic diversity of the future colony.

(It is not yet known whether the Skarsgardians will be eligible).

OOC:  What, if any height and weight restrictions are there for the passengers?  Need to know if Woo Li, a mammoth of a man, can be accomodated (give him a seat right next to Drib Nairb ...  Shocked).  Agamemnoff would like a seat next to Capsavian ...  Cheesy  And perhaps we can seat Paranoius next to Paraneus?

From the Notebooks of Leonardo, which will not be discovered until after the launch ...

"The preparations are almost complete, for my next attempt at travel through time and space.  By providing services to the Scottish National Space Centre (SNSC), under an alias, I have had access to higher end science, technology and materials than supported my initial crude attempt, fueled by the power of lightning.

"For this attempt, I am tapping the awsome power of the thrust of the 'Alpha Centurion', as we on the project have come to refer to it.  I have secreted an array of themo-electric cells into the thrust collection well under the ship, and hiding amongst the array of electrical cables at the launch site is the one connecting these cells to the new and more modern time machine in my workshop.

"When the engines engage, and the hot thrust fills the collection well, these thermo-electric cells will provide an enourmous spike of electrical power prior to their incineration.  This power surge will launch my new machine into space-time, coincident with the launch of the Alpha Centurion.  Who knows what time, place, or universe I will find myself in when the machine comes to rest?  Let the adventure begin!

The Democracy of Aidern has contributing a significant portion of her financial reserves to this project, as well as the insight of our best scientists.  In addition, we have sent one of our traditional palace guard units, led by SiggBurnstone, and a contingent of pioneers to represent the Dernish people in the galactic colonization.

This is a very exciting and motivating time for our people!  We have been inspired to construct physical headquarters to unite these nations in a forum of peaceful exchange.

On this day in 1746 AD...

After 30 years in space, the nearly 3,000 crew and passengers of the United Nations spaceship the "Alpha Centurion" have arrived at our closest neighbouring star and solar system, Alpha Centauri.  A new dawn of mankind has begun...

OOC: thanks everyone for an epic and enjoyable game, and especially to my allies, Viktor, Ricardo, Capsavian and Geronimo for making an allied (and very much shared) victory possible... and to Drib for nearly running away with the game and then being such a good sport in the face of some serious city burning...  Shocked  Shocked   Embarrassed  Well played.  Hats off to you and I hope to play with everyone again soon.

Cheers,
Munro

Sweet, I've never actually seen the Civ IV space victory screens before!

Congratulations, Munro, and I'd like to echo the sentiments:  this turned out to be a suitably epic game!

I think I'm going to let the old pitboss computer take a break for a while before we get Chaos and Civility 3 fired up.  In the interim, please post any ideas you have with respect to how we can improve and make CC3 more engaging and enjoyable.

Also, if anyone knows of a mod-maker, I'd like to get in touch with them to talk about some customizations for our unique needs.

Thanks for playing, everyone!

Congratulations Munro for your victory!
I enjoyed playing this game, which name is clearly well chosen: alternation of chaos (pretty nasty ones sometimes Embarrassed) and gentlemen civility. Thanks Capsavian for making this game run perfectly during such a long period!

(to be continued ... )

OOC: Congrats to Munro and the Continental Corporation (no one really thinks that Governments run the world, do they?) for the launch, landing, and victory.

The technology of The Founders has finally been realised. The amazing Rocketry science stolen by scottish officials has been used to send people of the Earth to another star system. There they will discover The Path continues unabated and perhaps they will find themselves a little closer to The Truth.

OOC: Congratulations Munro. While my egotistical in-game character will try to claim credit for everything, personally I think yours is an amazing victory. I seem to remember Scotland was little more than a mid-score civ when you took over and from that point on it has grown at a phenomenal rate out pacing every other civ by a significant margin. Perhaps you would care to share your secrets now the game is over?

OOC: I think I have lost my Civ 3 disk ...  Cheesy  Wink

Re: Drib's comment on Munro's ascent to the heavens ... Munro seems to know at every stage of a game what decisions will optimize all phases of his game.  While at times I look at two choices and wonder which is superior, I think Munro always knows which one is!  Grin

Whether that is instinct, theory, the ability to see the game future in his head, or a dedication to simulations I am not sure. (But do enlighten us!)

For this game, Agamemnoff would tell you that it was the intelligence and industriousness of the Yourcenaean people that Munro absorbed that propelled his victory ...  Wink  Cheesy

Good to know that the babilonian Space Ship ( Scotish in nominem Cheesy ) got well to Alpha centauri....

OCC:

The crucial factor , IMHO, was the fact that we in this continent were backwards for half of the game Cheesy We were researching Civil service when oyzar got Lib and stuff like that :/ That made that everyone  tried to get enough land around here to compensate for the backwardness. That lead to a situation where the 5 major powers of our continent found themselves, after most of the other players being driven out of the game, in a situation where war for more land ( or even for anything else ) was unprofitable, which lead to a bigger focus in the infrastructure for the second part of the game ( that and to a uninterrupted pop growth ) while Levgre/Fosse, Carolus, Drib and company were entertained with a full fledged continental war ( where the allies of Drib underperformed, to say the truth, atleast compared with the tactical manouvering of their oponents ) whipping/drafting their cities and making units. Seeing this, it was clear that the only chance that someone had in your continent to win was you gaining control of most of the continent ... as that didn't happened...

Well, I'll leave to Munro to say more if he wants, but I'll say that if Munro got so high, it was because he stood on the shoulders of giants and that a lot of the merit of his win should be credited to others Wink

Of course Ricardo, it was the joint effort on our land that help propell Munros win, and yes congrats to all in that participation.

In the days between now and when we're actually ready to start putting CC3 together, I suspect a lot of questions will be asked and answered.

As Ricardo alluded to, it was a team effort, though dV and Drib are right in their assessment of Munro's instinct and "big picture" skills.

That said, there were a number of top-shelf players in this game.  It's partially luck (starting location, position next to neighbors, WHO your neighbors are) and so many other factors, but ultimately there wasn't a single player in CC2 that I would have said was a poor leader.

Really, an awesome game to participate in, and I'm betting CC3 will ratchet it up another notch. Smiley

Congrats Munro (et al)! Glad to have been of assistance! Cheesy

If you really want to know the key to success in this game, you should ask Munro about how to properly use espionage to "tech trade" in a No Tech Trading game. That's a rather crucial part of the success of the western continent.

I hope to join C&C3 when it starts, wish I had been a part of this game from the outset.

@Cap, I'm no expert mod-maker but I do dabble a bit. It's possible I could be of some assistance. Feel free to bug me about it. Smiley

Excellent, Niklas!  Will definitely take you up on that, sir.  I don't think the modifications should be overly intensive, though one challenge would probably be in increasing the max-number of leaders to 30 or so (I know a couple existing mods do this, including the one we just used for CC2).
