Munro of Scotland (Chaos & Civility II)

« on: June 20, 2009, 07:37:32 PM »

This spectacular momenument to Scotland's fledging democracy was unveiled recently in the Scottish industrial heartland of Dumfries and Galloway.  Measuring 300 feet high and constructed from more than 250 tonnes of copper, stone and tartan cloth, lady liberty stands as a becon of hope to enslaved, oppressed and disenfranchised peoples throughout the world.

Designed, constructed and assembled over the course of several decades, the Statue of Liberty was built entirely by freed men and women.  Traditionally fueled by its strong merchant, scientific and cultural castes, Scotland has long eschewed state-sponsored slavery, and one of our new parliament's first acts was to formally abolish and outlaw all forms of slavery.

With the completion of this majestic tribute to freedom, Scotland now calls upon all state-sponsors of slavery to renounce this barbaric and unconscionable practice and to work diligently towards emancipation for all.

Representatives and scholars of all nations are hereby invited to visit our national institute of learning in nearby Galloway to learn more about the theory and practice of emmancipation and suffrage.  Galloway is also situtated close to the Holy Lands of Mosquito Valley, in the neighbouring nation of Oligar, and a warm welcome is assured to all who make the pilgrimage here to learn about and carry home our message of freedom, suffrage and religious enlightenment.

I am most intrigued by this concept of emancipation and suffrage.

The Words speak of a time when "a great power will  bestow the gift of freedom for all". I have always known this moment will come before us on The Path, but I had always assumed the great power was The One. Perhaps I have misinterpreted this prophecy and in fact Scotland is the power.

Perhaps you would be so kind as to explain the meaning of this and teach us how to learn of it's benefits.

Aidern congratulates our Scottish neighbors, even as members of our government express concern and unease with respect to this radical concept of individual liberties and freedom.  We feel this is a dangerous, zealous fad that can only cause fragmentation within your country, and threaten to destabilize your government.

While we commend your artisans for their impressive work, we hope that your radical ideas do not spill over into our country.

Your freedoms and tributes to said freedoms are inspiring.  Senator Fosse has sponsored a contest for writers to celebrate, in a cycle of plays in the finest Grecian tradition, the historical connection between Greece's age old Republic and Aidern's new Democracy.

Rumor has it that one entry replaces the traditional Chorus with a full Pipe and Drum regiment in tribute to your culture.

Perhaps.  Since time immemoriam, Scotland has been a monarchy.  However, with the memory of King Quotey now a distant legend, it has been many years since the throne has been occupied.  As steward of the throne I have executed my duties faithfully.  However, through my studies of the Greek Consitution - and their early form of representative government - I have come to understand that this was a primitive and morally dubious system of government.  Why should the power of the nation be concentrated in the hands of such a priveleged few?

So we studied the Greek system of Consitutional Representation, and researched on top of this our own political theories of 'democracy' (government by the people) - reaching the inevitable conclusion that all people are created equal, with three universal and inalienable rights, to -

  • liberty
  • free speech
  • self-determination of government (though a fair and equal vote)
.
National funds were diverted from other areas of research to develop these ideas into a practical system of government, and Scottish Democracy was born.  This has boosted the productivity and happiness of our largest population centres and the towns that surround them.  And from a ethical standpoint, this is the only path to a fair and moral society that any conscionable leader could follow.

Indeed, Scotland is exceedingly pleased to see that the Founders are now following this path to democracy, by studying the theories of nationhood and constitution first developed by the Greeks so many centuries ago.  We urge your scholars to pursue these studies to their natural conclusion, and study our system of Democracy also.  Only then will you be able to understand and adopt the theories of suffrage and emancipation which empower and legitimize any effective form of government, and will allow you to emerge into the fifteenth century as one of the world's truly civilized nations.

We wish you luck on The Path to democracy, Founders, and hope your people will one day witness the awesome power of The One true system of government, as perhaps your ancient texts have foretold. Wink

(In the meantime we urge you to abolish slavery and refrain from any further abuses of your population.  Just remember that one day you just might want them to vote for you.  Shocked )

Oligar citizens are impressed by all these new forms of governements. Our old kingdom is running somewhat fine until now but we can feel a certain desire of our people for more freedom and liberty... all the more that such appealing monuments as the Scottish Statue of Liberty is attracting some of our suburbian towns.
Our King Geronimo is appreciated, but he is aware of the current wind of change occuring even more closer to our land. We hope that he may give place to a more democratic form of government soon. Anyway he or his successor probably won't give up all of his attributions.
Anyway, although we keep an interested eye on Scottish scientific and economic wealth, we will fiercely defend our national sovereignity against any bad intentions or expansion wills.

Governement of Oligamon,
D. Onqui-otte
