The three villages that separated off of Sparta were dealt with very different environments.

Sparta, the original settlement, was in a surrounding completely around by forest, and next to a small lake.  corn was next to the lake to be gathered, or a person could walk several miles to the corns of fields near the exit of their forest shelter.
Living in Sparta, it seemed nothing could ever harm it's residents, if they wanted it so.

The city of Corinth lies on a hill, next to a river. North and east of the village there are dry plains which end up leading to the ocean, and few people end up down there.

Across the river there is a huge mountain, with forests on both sides.  Behind one of those forests lies a corn field the people of corinth can use, although it is a bit of a trek compared to the people of Sparta, with their corn right next to the town.
Far away west of the town there is a beautiful oasis and a flood plains, that the people easily use for food and barter

The third city lies on an expanse of flat land, which a river passes through.  The people must travel some distance from the central town to reach anything of importance.  Extending upwards on open plains, between two large forests on either sides, they can reach a deposit of fine metals to use for building.  There are also pigs that wander up that forest path.

Soon perhaps all these forests will be gone, and houses will be everywhere.  But there was this time where they were just simple villages, with their own idiosyncrasies.

OOC:  Hah, I wrote this while hyped up on Ambien... I took my turn and was zooming in, and all the land looked really really cool, and I felt sorta like I was there, like it was a living world ;p
