Yes, I found that to be true in my SP tests as well.  In ChaosCiv I, even, we had two civs, I think, who started in cramped and/or poor locations.  That was with just 18 players.

So, really, there's definitely an element of luck involved!

Regarding your multiplayer issues, one thing I've noticed is that with advanced starts on the pitboss, one has to be ultra-patient.  if you cannot connect (such as receiving a "waiting for peer" notice), then try again in 15-10 minutes.  The pitboss software is definitely not optimized for advanced starts.  Thankfully, that only happens once per game. Unfortunately the problem doesn't seem to be that simple.  I'm continually getting an unchanging "Waiting for civ choices" screen, regardless of whether anyone else is connected or not.  I spent a long time this afternoon with oyzar trying to pinpoint the problem, and it seems to be that (for whatever reason) the mod doesn't work properly for me in multiplayer.  Any game with up to 18 leaders I can join just fine, but more than that and I get the unending "Waiting for civ choices" screen.  I'm afraid that if I can't figure this out in the next day or so, I'll have to abadon this game.  Sad

Here's what I see every time I log into the server, without fail:

Just so I'm clear.  Have you tried this sequence?  Load up mod.  Make a 20civ single-player game.  Exit to Main Menu (not desktop).  Multi-player, DirectIP, poke in the game info, and you get that missing leaders screen?

If thats the case, do you have ANY other playermade mods installed?  Especially ones that allow more than 18players, like Giant Earth Map?

In the Beyond the Sword directory, no.  Only the ones that came with the game (Afterworld, Broken Star, Charlemagne, etc).

yeah, we've kind of gotten a wee bit off topic here, haven't we. Wink

I noticed you posted in CivFanatics regarding this issue, Emperor.  I do hope you can figure out what the cause of this grief is so you can join us!

Hmm ... you running XP or Vista?  If Vista, we had a folder permissions issue with the HOF mod in the GOTM that would deactive the exit buttons from the screens on the added HOF options tabs ... leaving you locked in those screens.  This kind of hang in mid operation sounds a bit similar ... Issue was that a new folder created lacked the permissions in default to do what it needed to do (that as much as I know about the details).  Adding full priviledges (full control) for all users (probably can be fewer, but I don't know which are critical) to either the particular mod, the mods folder, or the whole civ directory would fix it.

There are threads on this in CFC I can direct you to if this is likely the issue. (See link here http://www.chaosciv.com/index.php/topic,258.msg1874.html#msg1874)

Otherwise, have you tried re-downloading and reinstalling?  Maybe something was lost in the translation?

XP has been known to change folders to read-only, too, inexplicably.  So it could still potentially be that same affliction as has been noted regarding Vista.

Can you get someone to make a mapscript that is the same as we are using except removing most of th eice / thundra? All it adds to the game is completly ruining it for 3-8 people. Thats not really fun. Or maybe use a mapscript that doesn't have thundra/ice inherit(are there any such mapscripts other than stuff like highlands etc?).

Lets see.. What was it? 5 seafood, 2 land tiles, then a 18tile walk to non-tundra?  I think my second city had 17 ice tiles, a tundra iron, tundra furs and a deer.  Giving that game away to go RL sailing in the tropics was no great sacrifice...

The Tectonics map has a "no ice" option, but it still does tundra.

As I've said before, I'd rather not except as a last resort.  A complete reinstall of all patch versions to get my current setup would take several hours.

It's only a test game, so it doesn't matter what civ you pick.  It's just a matter of seeing if you can log in.  The actual game will begin in a day or two.  Smiley

Well I selected a civ that didn't have a password and received this error message

"The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod file have not been changed"

There is a deep discussion of this ongoing in the test game thread in the speakeasy

Thanks DV ... (still can't remember you from the pest comments Wink .... from a fast lookup on google ... issues with XP/VISTA NTFS vs FAT32 ... seems to be a permissions issue and or use of no cheating option ... I'll have a look at the deep discussion I guess.

I thought the point of having it in a separate thread was so outsiders couldn't see it? It is in the speaksy revisited forum.

Oops, sorry about that.  Forgot it wasn't in the private forum.  Someone please moderate out the IP address from my post (and oyzar's post) if it's a problem.  Smiley

Ah yes ... I remember ... the Klammi game ... now that was a lot of fun. If I recall the pest was a mother robin that was attacking the mail man ... A good swift swing with the shovel solved the nest issue.
